Despite CEO Reithofer’s ambitious sales goal, BMW is looking to increase profits mainly through tighter control on unit production costs. In other words, the company is willing to sell fewer high-priced cars instead of more mainstream models that earn less per sale. We thus expect the 2012 BMW 1-Series will move some ways up the price ladder, which is also the reported game plan for the redesigned 2013 3-Series. How far up remains to be seen. So, too, whether the higher prices will be offset by increased standard equipment. However, the likely addition of sedans and hatchbacks should allow some new 1s to be priced below today’s base-model coupe without crowding BMW’s other small-car line, the popular and profitable Mini. We imagine the marketing department will be working overtime on this job.
